To Heal the Sick or Not to Heal the Sick? That is the Question.

Updated: Jun 28, 2022

“Then the Lord said to him, ‘Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?”

--Exodus 4:11 ESV

“Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him [Jesus], and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw.”

--Matthew 12:22 ESV

Does God’s sovereignty (kingship) over every name--including sickness and disability--lead to the conclusion that the body of Christ (believers in Jesus--the church) shouldn’t heal the sick? (1)

Or to the contrary, does it lead to the conclusion that the body of Christ ought to heal the sick with confidence on the basis of Jesus' revelation of the Father and God’s commands and promises in His Word?

“And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— 9 but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. 10 And he said to them, ‘Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. 11 And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.’ 12 So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.”

--Mark 6:7-13 ESV

“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

--James 5:14-16 ESV

Study the following passages in context (and all the other ones too), asking the Holy Spirit to teach you His Word (1 Samuel 3:9-10). Don’t try to filter or interpret the Word of God through your own worldview, beliefs, past experiences, theological traditions, and preconceptions (Mark 7:6ff; Proverbs 3:5ff), but always let the Word of God become the filter that shapes what you will believe as you fellowship with the Author (Luke 1:38; John 17:17ff):
