Did King David Have a Jezebel spirit?

Updated: Jan 15, 2021

The Jezebel spirit didn’t start with Queen Jezebel. King David was before Queen Jezebel, and he was controlled by this kind of demon at a particular point in his life. How so?

The Jezebel spirit is all about control. In Revelation 2:20-23, the Jezebel spirit is described as teaching and seducing God’s servants into sexual immorality. One way this spirit does that is by encouraging drunkenness that it may lead to debauchery. c.f. Ephesians 5:18. When David committed adultery with Bathsheba, he tried to manipulate the situation and the people around him in order to save face (maintain a good reputation). He tried to get her husband (Uriah) drunk, hoping that Uriah would sleep with his freshly impregnated wife, so that others would not figure out that David was the father. See the story in 2 Samuel 11. (1)

Other people who have gone too far sexually may attempt to deal with their shame by glorying in their shame. c.f. Philippians 3:19. They will boast about their “dirtiness” and sexual “exploits” while prodding others to participate in drunken orgies with them. It is all a tactic to control the others to fall as they did, that they may feel more justified or excused about their own moral failures. (2) King David further attempted to manipulate and control the situation by plotting Uriah’s death in covert manner. Having succeeded, he could take Bathsheba as his own wife, having covered up his misdeeds through covert manipulation.

Although David may have gotten away with his adultery and murder by his successful cover-ups, his transgressions could not escape the eyes of God. Thus, God sent a prophet to expose to David his sin. Consequently, David repented of his sin; he agreed with God that he was in the wrong to break God’s commandments. He pleaded with God to give him a clean heart that desired to love and obey God once more. Being a man after God’s own heart that was quick to turn from wrongdoing back into a right relationship with God, God restored him to the joy of his salvation and gave him a spirit willing to obey Him.

See 2 Samuel 12 and Psalm 51.

There were unfortunate consequences that occurred as a result of his sin, such as unnecessary deaths (and marital dysfunction) among his children, for the wages of sin is death. c.f. Romans 6:23a. (3) The good news is that from the descendant line of David would come another King. This King would never commit sexual immorality. He was pure of heart, never looked lustfully at anyone, and he had an intimate relationship with God his Father. He saw God, and he did whatever he saw his Father doing. He did not commit murder, nor did he hate nor hold an unforgiving grudge against anyone who hurt him.

C.f. Matthew 5:8, 21f, 27f; Luke 23:34; John 5:19; 1 Peter 2:22-25

How was it possible for Jesus to never sin or break any of God’s commandments?

Mary, Jesus’ mother, was a descendent of King David, so her soul had generational curses and even demonic kings that were passed down to her through her bloodline. How could her sin and the sin of her ancestors not be passed onto Jesus in her womb, the place where we receive whatever junk is in the souls of our parents? (“Womb” in the Greek also means “the soul”).

“And the angel answered her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.”

--Luke 1:35a.

The power of the Most High overshadowed her. This “power” in the Greek is called “dunamis,” the same power that later raised Jesus from the dead and which means “excellence of soul,” “moral power,” and “the power to perform a miracle.” (4) Consequently, Mary essentially declared the truth that she was made excellent of soul, and that the demonic kings that had been passed down to her generationally had been removed from their thrones (the control center of her intellect, will, and emotions). See Luke 1:36-52. Since her soul/womb was made holy and pure by the dunamis (power) from the Holy Spirit, Jesus could be born without the sin and soul wounds of Mary and her ancestors going back all the way to Adam (the first human being).

This King, Jesus Christ, was murdered so that we would no longer be controlled by lust, anger, hate, fear, or any evil spirit, but rather be controlled by the very Spirit of God who empowered Jesus to love God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love his neighbor as he loved himself. The following prayer can be your confession (agreement with God) to bring you into a personal relationship with Him, or to simply make you more excellent of soul (as you are filled with God the Holy Spirit’s dunamis power) if you already have a personal relationship with Jesus as your King. Read it aloud if it expresses the desire of your heart, “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” Romans 10:9-10 ESV

Father,

I want to know you personally as my King and my God. I confess that I have rebelled against you through wrong attitudes and actions of control, manipulation, lust, anger, greed, envy, and fear, and by placing these other gods before You. Because I committed treason against the King who created me and the whole universe, I know that I deserve to be separated from You forever. But I thank You for Your grace; thank You that You decided not to give me what I deserve by sending your Son, Jesus Christ, to absorb the full force of Your wrath towards my rebellion. I believe that You sent Jesus to take the full punishment for all my sin through his death on the cross.

I am sorry for how all my disloyalty and wrongdoing put Your Son through all that suffering on my behalf. Thank you that You did it so that I could have a personal relationship with You. I surrender my old life completely to You; thank You that now I receive the life of Jesus Christ, so that I can love You will all my heart, soul, mind, and strength, just like Jesus did.

I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead. Thank you that that same power that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in me, giving life to my mortal body by Your Spirit who now lives in me. Thank you for taking away my heart of stone and for giving me a heart of flesh. Just as Your power removed the 4,000 pound stone far away from the mouth of Jesus’ tomb when he rose from the dead, I thank You that that same power has entered me to fill me with Your power and eternal life.

Thank you for making me excellent in my intellect, will, and emotions, and for setting my spirit free from all sin, generational curses, and evil spirits. As I commit to growing in the intimate relationship with You for which You created me for all eternity, I thank you for how I will prosper and be in health even as my soul prospers. Just as You have now made my spirit perfectly free from sin, curses, and demons, I thank You for how that will become increasing true for my soul (intellect, will, emotions), health, finances, and relationships on a progressive basis as Your Holy Spirit teaches me how to abide (live) in You as Your words abide in me.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen (“So be it!”)

  1. David was supposed to be out fighting the Ammonites around the time he was tempted. The Ammonites came to exist when Lot’s daughters seduced their father through drunkenness to carry on a lineage. Since David wasn’t engaging in warfare as he was supposed to be doing, it is interesting that David tried to manipulate Uriah through drunkenness just like Lot’s daughters sought to control Lot through drunkenness. Thus it appears the Ammonite spirit exercised dominion over David. C.f. Genesis 19:34-38.

  2. Although this gender-neutral demon chooses a feminine name for its identity, the Jezebel spirit could be in even more men than women.

  3. “Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women,...” 1 Kings 11:1 ESV. Why did Solomon (David and Bathsheba’s next son) love these demon-worshipping women? The gods of these pagan nations played a role in the sin from which Solomon was conceived. Take note that Jezebel was a future Sidonian, Uriah was a Hittite, and the Ammonites were attacking Israel at the time of David’s adultery and murder. Solomon’s unhealed soul had something in common with these demons that he inherited through his parents' bloodlines, so these demons could seduce him through the women whom they also indwelt.
