Don't Forget God's Teaching

How does a son or daughter of God not forget God's teaching? By letting our hearts keep His commandments. How do we do that?

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalms 119:9‭-‬11 ESV

In the moment of decision, trial, pressure, and/or temptation, it may be very easy to forget God's teaching. One's fears or flesh is screaming at us to submit immediately to its will or desires. How can we choose to resist? See James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8-11; Deut. 30.

If we have God's Word stored up in our heart, which will also keep our hearts clean, we can immediately speak it out so that it can effectively dismantle every thought that assails us and wants to bring us down (Eph. 5:26f; 6:10ff; Isa. 54:17; Jer. 4:14; 2 Cor. 10:4-6). This occurs in the context of relationship (communication, reverent awe, and intimacy) with God (John 15; Philippians 4:4-9).

How do we store up God's Word in our hearts? By meditating on it day and night. See Psalm 1; Joshua 1:8; Jeremiah 17:5-10. That means changing the way we think by agreeing with everything that God thinks and says. Such will require an intimate knowledge of His Word (which He gave us in the Bible, a Book which is all about Jesus).

Personal application ideas: Look up, collect, search for, and write down verses and passages from the Bible. Think about them, speak them aloud, ask God to teach you what they mean and how you can apply them properly to your life circumstances, situations, and purposes. C.f. John 6:45; 14:26; 1 John 2:27.

If you don’t yet know God in a personal relationship but would like to, I explain more about it in posts such as this one: Did You Hear the News?
